Event Summary
The Chronicles of Web Standard: the HTML 5, the Comet and the WebSocket will be an exciting event coving Comet, HTML 5, the latest, and future enhancements to the web. AJAX became popular because it allows a browser to request additional information from the server. One major limitation of AJAX is that the browser must initiate the request for data from the server. Comet solves this problem by allowing the server to push data to the browser at any time. This event will start with a general introduction to Comet, followed by an in depth panel discussion moderated by Kevin Nilson with panelist: John Fallows, Alex Russell, and.. . After the panel Kevin Nilson will give a Technical Comet Presentation which outlines: Overview of Polling, Long Polling, and Streaming, followed by Details Bayuex using Cometd.

What is Web Socket
The HTML5 WebSocket standard defines the future of networking for browser applications, delivering full-duplex, bidirectional text-based communication between browsers and WebSocket servers. The WebSocket connection handshake leverages the HTTP standard to integrate with existing Web infrastructure, such as proxies, firewalls and load balancers, and then upgrades the wire protocol to remove the limitations of the HTTP request-response communication model. With WebSockets, browsers will be able to participate as first-class citizens in networked applications that are typically reserved for desktop clients, such as XMPP (Jabber) chat applications, as well as online gaming and financial trading applications.

Kaazing Enterprise Gateway makes this future promise a reality today by emulating the WebSocket API with two HTTP connections, one for upstream and one for downstream. Kaazing goes further by adding support for binary communication, and delivers various WebSocket protocol clients, including XMPP. When sufficientily capable plug-ins are available, Kaazing instead implements the WebSocket standard precisely, using only a single, full-duplex, bidirectional network connection. Browser applications built using Kaazing Enterprise Gateway today will seemlessly fall forward onto the HTML5 WebSocket implementation from browser vendors in future.

Alex Russell served as Project Lead for the Dojo Toolkit from 2004 to 2008 and is Director of R&D at SitePen, a consultancy focused on the development of web applications, exceptional user experience, and pushing the limits of the web. Currently, he serves as President of the Dojo Foundation, an organization that supports development of several high-quality, open source, JavaScript projects and distributes them under liberal terms. Prior to joining SitePen, Russell was a senior engineer at JotSpot and Informatica where he helped both companies build highly interactive, web interfaces. His earlier, open source involvement included stints as editor of the OWASP Guide to Building Secure Web Applications and primary author of the netWindows DHTML toolkit.

He works in the Google Developer Programs group as an Open Web Advocate spending time in the land ofcode.google.comand working with developer facing technology. Dion loves building useful Web applications, enjoys writing having co-authored "Pragmatic Ajax", and speaking at events around the world including JavaOne, and Web 2.0 Expo.

John Fallows
CTO and co-founder at Kaazing
John Fallows is a pioneer in the field of rich and highly interactive user interfaces and co-founder of Kaazing. Originally from Northern Ireland, he graduated from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom and has worked in the software industry for more than 10 years. Before founding Kaazing, John was a consulting member of the technical staff for server technologies at Oracle. During his last five years at Oracle, he focused on designing, developing, and evolving Oracle ADF Faces to fully integrate AJAX technologies. He is co-author of the best-selling book, "Pro JSF and Ajax: Building Rich Internet Components," (Apress). In his role as chief technology officer, John formulates Kaazing's vision of creating the best real-time Web framework based on the Java standard. He defines the architecture of the Kaazing product suite and oversees its development.

Michael Carter

Founder at Orbited Project & Official Contributor for W3C HTML5

Michael Carter is an expert on highly scalable, real-time web application architectures. He is an officially recognized contributor to the W3C HTML5 specification, particularly for his work with the WebSocket proposal. He is the founder and lead of the Orbited project (http://www.orbited.org), an MIT licensed Comet server built for high-performance browser networking. He is currently a freelance consultant and technical lead for OSSLine (www.ossline.org), a Silicon Valley non-profit that provides technical and legal infrastructure to a host of Open Source projects, including Orbited, the browser network protocols projectjs.io(http://js.io), and the python message queue MorbidQ (http://www.morbidq.com). Michael formerly worked as a Senior Software Architect at Brand Up (http://www.brand-up.com) and CTO at Idealistics (www.idealistics.org). He is a world renowned rollerblade free styler and speed demon, and in some other life he does nothing but play Hockey full time.

Kevin Nilson
Principal Software Architect at E*Trade Financial
Kevin Nilson is currently a Principal Software Architect for E*Trade Financial in Menlo Park, CA. He is the co-lead of the Silicon Valley Web Developer JUG <https://sv-web-jug.dev.java.net/>. He is also the co-lead of the Silicon Valley Google Technology User Group <http://sv-gtug.org/>.
Prior to E*Trade Financial, Kevin had extensive industry software engineering and consulting experience with companies such as: Pfizer, Northrop Grumman, AT&T Corporation, etc. He also worked part-time as an adjunct professor at the College of San Mateo.
Kevin received a Bachelors degree in Computer Science with a Minor in Mathematics from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and a Masters degree in Computer Science from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. He is a Sun Certified Java Programmer and Sun Certified Web Component Developer.

Ted Goddard

Ted Goddard received his PhD in mathematics in 1996, answering open problems in complexity theory and infinite colorings for ordered sets, and proceeded with post-doctoral research in component and Web-based collaborative technologies. Following work at Java Software, Sun Microsystems, he was a device management and XML architect at Wind River, participating in the IETF NETCONF design team. Ted currently participates in the JavaServer Faces and Servlet expert groups and is a senior software architect at ICEsoft Technologies developing ICEfaces, an Ajax framework for JavaServer Faces.
